According to Ambuja Srivastava, a health activist based in Mumbai, as many 70 per cent of the hospital patients use more than one antibiotic during health care procedures. Srivastava noted that the antibiotics must be taken individually in the hospitals where patients had access to them. Instead of using multiple antibiotics, they should be taken in the hospital doses that can be administered easily during treatment.
He said that at present, many physicians are using antibiotics with the purpose of treating minor ailments. If this method is used for treating infections, then they will become resistant to these drugs.
Srivastava pointed out that in most instances of resistance, there is an increase in the numbers of resistant bacteria, making them susceptible to antibiotics.
"Some of these antibiotics are not used for treatment and they are given to hospitals indiscriminately for routine hygiene. When people acquire and carry resistant bacteria, then they may be able to spread their germs other patients."
Chaudhry and Srivastava further stated that it was necessary for doctors and hospitals to conduct periodic checks on the use of antibiotics in hospitals as well patients and to ensure that the patients are given an opportunity to use antibiotics appropriately.
